We all love Paris. We also all know what Paris in July looks like. The best discoveries crossing my desk this season are happening in the cities just a couple of hours away from the obvious one — Lyon instead of Paris, Mendoza instead of Buenos Aires, Nikko instead of Tokyo, Innsbruck instead of Vienna. Same country, completely different trip: more space, more authenticity, and the kind of memories that come from somewhere you didn’t expect. Here are seven “secondary” cities I think deserve top billing — and exactly what makes each one earn it.
